Use WritingBuddy right from Claude or ChatGPT
Connect your account once, then create workspaces, generate outlines, draft full documents, and read the results back — without leaving your chat app.
WritingBuddy's MCP connector is a remote Model Context Protocol server that plugs your WritingBuddy account into Claude or ChatGPT as a custom connector. Once connected, the assistant can call a small set of WritingBuddy tools on your behalf — every call is scoped to your own account and runs through the same billing and quota checks as the web app, so there's no separate limit to track and no way for it to touch anything outside document generation.
What you can do
A full set of tools, available to any connected chat app.
Spin up a new project — pick the type, title, citation style, language, and target length, same as the New Workspace dialog on the web app.
Change the title, length, citation style, writing tone, or special instructions on an existing project at any time before generating.
Ask what theses or papers you've got in progress, with their status and progress.
See how many documents you have left this billing period before you start a new one.
Describe a topic to get a structured, chapter-by-chapter table of contents, then attach it to a project — editing sections by hand first if you like.
Hand over PDFs or DOCX files as supporting evidence — each one gets summarized automatically and used during generation.
Upload a bibliography export or research paper to extract its citations automatically, or add a reference by typing its details directly.
Kick off full-document generation on a project, then check on its progress until it's done.
Pull the generated draft straight into the chat once it's ready, to read, quote, or talk through next.
Download the finished document as DOCX, PDF, Markdown, LaTeX, or plain text once generation is complete.
Bring in a thesis or paper you've already written (PDF, DOCX, and more) as a project, free, to unlock the Thesis Pro tools below on it.
Upload a standalone paper and get a scored, section-by-section review — structure, argument, writing, citations, abstract, methodology, and conclusion.
Run a health check for a score, category breakdown, and findings, then get a one-click Fix All proposal for citation and structural issues.
Generate likely defense questions with suggested answers and weak-point detection, sized to how long your defense will run.
Practice a live, turn-by-turn defense with an AI committee right in the chat — it asks, you answer, it evaluates and follows up.
Condense your thesis into a standalone, journal-article-length paper, saved as its own new project.
Turn your thesis into a ready-to-present .pptx deck, with a choice of themes, in one call.

What to type in the chat
Copy any of these into Claude or ChatGPT once the connector is attached — edit the details to fit your own project.
1. Start a project
Spin up a workspace, give it a shape, and feed it source material — the same as wizard steps 1-6.
Create a new WritingBuddy project called "The Impact of Remote Work on Team Productivity." It's a 60-page master's thesis, IEEE citation style, written in English.
Generate an outline for that thesis — 8 chapters covering introduction, literature review, methodology, results, discussion, and conclusion — then save it to the project.
Here's a PDF of a related study I want you to use as evidence — add it as a source on my thesis project so the AI references it during generation.
2. Generate, read back, and download
Kick off the full draft, check on it, then pull it into the chat or export a file you can open and edit.
Start generating the full document for my thesis project now. Check the progress every couple of minutes and let me know the moment it's done.
Show me the current draft of my thesis so I can review it.
Export my thesis as a DOCX file so I can download it and keep editing it in Word. (Works the same for PDF, Markdown, LaTeX, or plain text — just ask for a different format.)
Change the writing tone to more technical and precise, and add this instruction: focus more on the quantitative results. Then regenerate the document.
3. Thesis Pro tools
Once a project has content — generated or imported — these run health checks, defense prep, and more on it.
Run a Thesis Checker health check on my thesis, tell me the three biggest issues, and propose fixes for any reference-list problems it finds.
Prepare me for a 15-minute thesis defense — likely committee questions with suggested answers, and the weakest points they're likely to press on.
Start a mock defense session for my thesis and ask me the first question.
Condense my thesis into a standalone, journal-article-length research paper.
Turn my thesis into a defense presentation deck using the "Navy Gold" theme, with me as presenter and Dr. Lee as supervisor.
4. Feedback on work you already have
For a standalone paper, or a thesis you wrote outside WritingBuddy.
Here's a paper I wrote — give me structured feedback on its structure, argument, writing, citations, and conclusion.
I already have a finished thesis as a Word doc — import it as a new project so I can run Thesis Checker on it.
Note: WritingBuddy's chat tools don't rewrite your prose in place — use them to create, generate, read back, and export your document, or to tweak the outline and settings between generations. To edit finished text directly, export it (DOCX, PDF, Markdown, LaTeX, or plain text) and open it in your usual editor.
MCP Connector FAQ
Does the MCP connector cost anything extra?
No — it uses the exact same plan and document quota as the WritingBuddy web app. Generating through Claude or ChatGPT draws from the same monthly or one-time-purchase allowance, nothing separate.
Which chat apps can I connect?
Claude and ChatGPT, on whichever of their plans support adding a custom remote MCP connector by URL. Both products are rolling this out — if you don't see a connectors option yet, it may not be available on your current plan there.
What can WritingBuddy's connector actually see or do in my account?
Only what's needed to create, configure, and list your projects; generate and save outlines; upload source files, references, and existing documents; generate documents; read back and export the drafts; report your quota; get feedback on a paper; and run the Thesis Pro tools (Thesis Checker, Defense Preparation, Mock Defense, Research Paper, Defense Presentation) — the same logic, plan gates, and limits as the web app, nothing more. It can't change your billing, delete your account, or access anything outside document generation.
What does "beta" mean here?
The connector is new and still being refined — tool behavior and setup steps may change as we improve it. If something doesn't work as expected, let us know.
How do I disconnect it?
Remove the custom connector from your Claude or ChatGPT settings at any time — that revokes its access to your WritingBuddy account immediately.
Why does it ask me to log in to WritingBuddy?
The connector uses a standard OAuth sign-in so it only ever acts as you, on your own account — the same Firebase login you already use on the web app, just via a one-time consent screen instead of a sign-in form.
