Writing & AI
How does the AI writing work?
WritingBuddy uses GPT-4 to advance LLM models to generate thesis content section by section. You configure the topic, page count, language, citation style, and tone. The AI then generates each chapter section while incorporating your uploaded sources and references.
Can I upload my own outline?
Yes. You can upload an outline file in PDF, DOCX, TXT, or Markdown format. WritingBuddy will follow your outline structure during generation.
Will the AI use my uploaded research sources?
Yes. When you upload PDF or DOCX source files, WritingBuddy reads them and incorporates the relevant content into the generated sections.
How long does generation take?
Generation time depends on document length. A 20-page document typically takes 3–8 minutes. Pro and Elite plan users have access to priority queues for faster generation.
Is the AI content original? Will it pass plagiarism checks?
WritingBuddy generates original content based on your topic configuration. While AI-generated content is not plagiarism in the traditional sense, you should always review and revise the output before submission.
Is WritingBuddy content plagiarism free?
Yes. WritingBuddy generates every sentence from scratch using large language models, it does not copy or reproduce text from existing sources. Each document is unique to your topic, configuration, and uploaded sources. That said, all AI-generated academic writing should be reviewed before submission. Running your final document through a plagiarism checker such as Turnitin, iThenticate, or Grammarly Plagiarism Checker is always a good practice to confirm originality before submitting to your institution.
Is AI-generated academic content detectable by AI detectors?
AI detectors such as ZeroGPT, GPTZero, Turnitin AI Detection, and Copyleaks can sometimes flag AI-assisted writing, particularly when the text is left unedited. Detection accuracy varies widely across tools, many produce false positives even on human-written content. WritingBuddy generates structured academic prose with complex sentence patterns, which scores lower on most detectors than generic AI output. However, the most reliable way to reduce detection risk is to review, personalise, and rewrite sections using your own voice and insights before submission.
How can I make AI-generated content less detectable?
The most effective techniques to humanise AI-generated academic writing are: (1) Back-translation: paste your text into Google Translate, translate to another language (e.g. German or French), then translate back to English. This naturally restructures sentence patterns while preserving meaning. (2) Paraphrase key paragraphs in your own voice, adding personal observations and field-specific terminology your AI tool may not use. (3) Mix in manually written sentences between AI-generated passages to break statistical patterns that detectors rely on. (4) Use a paraphrasing tool such as QuillBot to rephrase individual sentences. (5) Check your draft with ZeroGPT or GPTZero before submission to identify high-risk paragraphs, then rewrite those sections manually. Remember: always ensure your final submission accurately represents your understanding of the topic.
Citations & References
How does the citation generator work?
WritingBuddy queries Semantic Scholar, OpenAlex, and CrossRef to find real academic papers with verified DOIs. Citations are placed in-text during writing and a full reference list is generated at the end of the document.
What citation styles are supported?
APA 7th Edition, IEEE, Harvard, Chicago, Oxford, MLA, and Vancouver. More styles will be added based on user demand.
Can I use my own reference library?
Yes. Upload a BibTeX (.bib), RIS, CSV, XML, JSON, TXT, or DOCX reference file and WritingBuddy will use your own references instead of auto-discovering new ones.
Are the citations accurate?
WritingBuddy retrieves citations from established academic databases and uses DOIs for verification. However, you should always review citations before submission. AI-generated citations without database verification may contain errors.
Export & Formatting
What export formats does WritingBuddy support?
PDF, Microsoft Word (.docx), LaTeX (.tex), Markdown (.md), and plain text (.txt). All formats are generated server-side with proper academic formatting.
Is the LaTeX output Overleaf-compatible?
Yes. The LaTeX export is a complete .tex source file with \documentclass, \section, \textbf, \textit, and structured lists. You can upload it directly to Overleaf.
Can I re-export the same document multiple times?
Yes. Your generated document stays in your account until you delete it. You can export it in any format at any time.
